Artists and design professionals with a passion for architectural illustration gathered together from across the globe in sunny Marina del Rey, California to discuss and share techniques and ideas at the 33rd Architecture in Perspective Conference hosted by the American Society of Architectural Illustrators October 11-13, 2018. The ASAI is an organization that includes professional illustrators, architects, designers, educators, students, and anyone engaged in the pursuit of architectural illustration.

Some of the highlights of the conference included an architectural walking tour of downtown LA, a plein air and urban sketching workshop of the Venice Canals by renowned artist and architect, Tom Schaller, a sunset cruise, and a chance to view the award-winning artwork from this year’s Architecture in Perspective Competition on display at the A+D Museum. In addition, guests could also check out the Wireframes exhibit on view, a milestone showcase that tracks the art of architectural visualization since its inception and is the very first exhibit of its kind.

Keely Colcleugh

Our CEO, Keely Colcleugh, the named ASAI President for the 2019 year, gave a talk at this year’s conference titled Visualization: What’s Next?, which addressed illustration’s long history not only as a design tool, but more importantly as a communication tool capable of bridging the gap between the architect and the general public. The talk discussed harnessing the growing relevance of VR and AR, probably the most revolutionary change in an industry we’ve ever seen, to create engagement, allowing everyone access and spatial understanding of an architectural concept and quite possibly any experience imaginable. Another key point involved looking past photorealism to see how different styles and aesthetic approaches can resonate when relating the concept of an architectural design to people.

In addition, every year the ASAI invites professionals and students to participate in the internationally juried Architecture in Perspective Competition. We are thrilled to announce two Kilograph colleagues, Fredy Castellanos and Kung-Wei “Jerry” Chen, received an Award of Excellence for their work.
