Tip 1: Start big and simple.
No matter if it’s an exterior or interior scene; I always like to start by using the V-Ray Sun as my general light source. Using an override, V-Ray grey material allows me to iterate faster.
Note: Remember to link the V-Ray Sun to the Sky Map.
Tip 2: Let the engine help you.
V-Ray gets faster with every release, taking advantage of the newer features such as the interactive rendering, the automatic exposure and the adaptive dome light (last two are new on V-Ray Next) will allow you to iterate faster and forget about settings.

Tip 4: V-Ray LightSelect passes are awesome!
In Archviz we usually don’t have the time/budget to render an image or a sequence multiple times to split the lighting contribution of the different parts of a light rig. By using this render element and playing with the different modes you can refine or even change the mood of your lighting in post.
