Kilograph Studio goes to NAB Show 2016

The Kilograph team just got back from NAB show 2016 in Las Vegas. It is an annual event for media and entertainment professionals organized by the National Association of Broadcasters. NAB explores the newest ways to deliver content through the use of emerging mediums. It is an exceptional place to learn more about what is at the forefront of new technologies.

With such a large choice of topics, we were able to attend several panels from cinema and visual effects to interaction and VR. A large section of the event was dedicated to Virtual Reality, which is where we spent a lot of our time. This is the year for VR, and this rapidly growing medium is becoming more and more relevant to the future of many industries, including our own.

NAB 2016

At Kilograph, we recognize that VR will become an important new medium within architecture and other related fields. It will be used for many diverse applications. We envision a future where VR is accessible and offers the same opportunities as other mediums.

The Virtual & Augmented Reality Pavilion in particular offered interesting conferences and panels on the future of this new technology. Panelists discussed the future of cinematic VR and new opportunities  that have been made possible. One panel in particular offered very interesting insights on the future of AR and VR. The chart below shows impressive projections on the market for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in 2020. As Virtual Reality is becoming popular and accepted within markets, we are interesting to see how this will play into the rise of Augmented Reality. This is a new opportunity to explore.

Among other big technological developments present at NAB, we thought the Light Field camera by Lytro was very interesting. This camera records all the information in a scene using rays of light. This camera was largely in part developed for VR in order to create digital scenes.  After filming and the post production phase, it can offer great flexibility for altering a filmed area. You can adjust focus, aperature, and alter specific areas of the scene easily. It is remarkable to see how technologies related to the rise of Virtual Reality will effect other fields.

Our team got a lot out of attending this event and we are all looking forward to experimenting with what we learned. Keeping up with new technologies and mediums are something we enjoy and this conference was no exception.
